Former Illinois Governor George Ryan has died at the age of 91. He served prison time for federal corruption charges.

A Republican, he imposed a moratorium on capital punishment, saying he could not support a death-row system “so fraught with error” that it might end an innocent life.

His one term as governor ended amid accusations he used government offices to reward friends, win elections and hide corruption that played a role in the fiery deaths of six kids.
