Hamas accepts proposed deal for ceasefire with Israel and hostage release, Egyptian source says
Hamas has accepted the latest proposal for a 60-day ceasefire with Israel that includes the return of half the hostages the group holds in Gaza and Israel's release of some Palestinian prisoners, an Egyptian official source said on Monday.
Hamas has formally accepted a 60-day ceasefire proposal brokered by international mediators, as diplomatic pressure grows on Israel to agree to a truce amid rising domestic protests and a mounting death toll in Gaza.
Israel has announced plans to reoccupy Gaza City, putting Hamas under pressure to reach a ceasefire deal. But there has been no formal response about whether Israel will agree to the terms.
Political commentator Amit Segal says the Prime Minister is keeping the option of a partial deal with Hamas open, even as those close to him claim his focus is on conquering Gaza.
Hamas said it was prepared to coordinate with the Red Cross to deliver aid to hostages it holds in Gaza, if Israel meets certain conditions.
The video of emaciated 24-year-old Evyatar David is one of a series released by Palestinian militants in recent days that show Israeli hostages.
