NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport Folk Festival is on pause as a strong line of thunderstorms move across the state. Concertgoers were ordered to shelter in place in their vehicles or take cover in nearby buildings until the storms pass. There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for the entire region through 9 p.m.

The 2025 Newport Folk Festival is ready to jam out July 25-27 and the Newport Jazz Festival is set to take over the Fort the following weekend from Aug. 1-3. Among this year's Folk headliners are Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Public Enemy and Jack Antonoff. While jazz fans will be greeted by the likes of Janelle Monae, The Roots and De La Soul.
