With Hurricane Erin churning across the Atlantic near the northern Caribbean islands, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center tagged a new area to watch across the Main Development Region in the central tropical Atlantic.
By Rishabh Jaiswal and Preetika Parashuraman (Reuters) -Hurricane Erin, the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, is a formidable Category 4, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an update late on Saturday downgrading the storm from Category 5 as the wind speed eased slightly.
While the threat of any direct impact to the East Coast and Bahamas is easing, NHC said swells generated by Erin would likely lead to life-threatening surf and rip currents along the East Coast beaches next week.
The likely path of a disturbance, increasingly expected to develop into a cyclone, has encroached on Texas in recent days, National Hurricane Center (NHC) tracker maps show.
Hurricane Erin is forecast to remain well offshore but still bring hazardous currents and possible erosion like previous offshore hurricanes before it.
