President Donald Trump officially withdrew the nomination of Ed Martin to be the next U.S. Attorney of Washington, D.C., conceding that the conservative activist and one-time counsel for January 6 rioters would be unable to survive Senate confirmation.

By using another interim appointment to fill a vacancy for the top prosecutor in Washington, the White House is bypassing Senate confirmation and potentially claiming expansive authority.
