The Jets reportedly are hiring Aaron Glenn as their new head coach after he spent the last four seasons as the Lions' defensive coordinator.

The Jets are applying the finishing touches to a contract to hire Glenn, the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, as their coach, a person familiar with the deliberations confirmed Wednesday. Glenn played for the Jets as a cornerback, beginning when they selected him 12th overall in the NFL draft in 1994.

Glenn, a former Texas A&M standout, beat out 15 other candidates for the job as the Jets went through an extensive search to find their next coach.

Lions quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell is reportedly a prime candidate for offensive coordinator, provided he doesn’t secure the OC role in Detroit. Glenn is also eyeing a veteran defensive coordinator with head coaching experience and has former Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff in mind for a key role, should Westhoff come out of retirement.

Glenn comes back to New York after a strong playing career as a former first-round pick in 1994. He is entering the top job as a first time head coach but has been with the team as a scout, and has had other stops around the league as an assistant under Sean Payton and Dan Campbell.
