The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm conditions on the evening of Thursday (Feb. 13) and high activity throughout Friday (Feb. 14), as a fast-moving solar wind stream heads for Earth.

The northern lights are best seen between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, according to NOAA, which recommends traveling to a high vantage point away from light pollution. If conditions are optimal, aurora borealis may be seen as far as 620 miles away.

Fast solar winds are heading to the UK, bringing with them an increased chance of viewing the Northern Lights. The spectacular lights appear as large areas of colour across the sky with vibrant pale green, pink, shades of red, yellow, blue and violet.

Aspiring viewers of the Northern Lights are encouraged to go as far north as possible, away from light pollution, and face the northern horizon. The best time to view the lights is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, and a high vantage point increases the likelihood of seeing the phenomena.

The northern lights may be visible in portions of Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday nights, according to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. The SWPC's forecast indicates that aurora borealis could be visible as far south as central Wisconsin on Friday night and northern Wisconsin on Saturday night.
