Hennepin County officials have closed a dozen beaches and placed many others under advisory, mainly due to E. coli levels. Hennepin County Health and Human Services and the Three Rivers Park district monitor beaches in the county once a week, testing the waters for unsafe bacteria.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board says beaches at Bde Maka Ska and Lake Hiawatha are among those affected.

However, if you're planning a weekend beach trip, you'll want to avoid the beaches closed due to unsafe swimming water. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) states that swimming in the water at these closed beaches poses a threat of illness due to high levels of bacteria.
