PGA Tour Sends Touching Message on Scottie Scheffler, Wife Meredith and Son Bennett originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Sunday at Royal Portrush, Scottie Scheffler reflected on what mattered most as he hoisted the Claret Jug, describing how his first instinct after tapping in on the 18th green was to find his wife Meredith and son Bennett.
It was reminiscent of Canterbury in the 1973 PGA Championship. Jack Nicklaus, who that week broke the record for most major titles, was coming off the 18th green after the second round when 4-year-old son Gary ran out to meet him. The Golden Bear carried off his cub.
Scheffler's father, Scott Scheffler, is from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. He was a carpenter and stay-at-home dad throughout Scottie's youth, and he played a role in the star golfer's interest in the sport as a kid, including taking him to the driving range and with Diane, eventually getting Scottie access to Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas.
Scottie Scheffler: He’s spent the last three-and-a-half years as the best player on the planet, but now he’s officially the CHAMPION GOLFER OF THE YEAR for the first time. The World No. 1 won major No. 4 by four shots —and it didn’t feel that close.
