LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two Southwest Airlines flight attendants are being treated for injuries after a passenger jet heading to Las Vegas from Southern California took a dramatic plunge shortly after takeoff Friday, the airline and passengers said.

After departing from Burbank, traffic alerts required a Southwest Airlines flight crew on a Las Vegas-bound plane to "climb and descend to comply with the alerts," according to an airline representative.

A Southwest flight out of Burbank airport experienced a steep drop which injured two flight attendants Friday. The pilot told passengers he was avoiding a collision.

Southwest Airlines says pilots on board Flight 1496 from Burbank to Las Vegas got two serious warnings at 14,000 feet. The pilots then took immediate action to avoid colliding with another plane. Passengers describe a harrowing scene on board,

Southwest Airlines' CEO told investors in a July 24 earnings call that the airline could eventually open its own lounges.

Southwest passengers will be assigned seats, ending the chaotic scramble of its current open seating plan. The ability to choose your seat opens July 29, 2025, for flights departing in 2026 and beyond.

A body was located Friday, July 25, in Van Buren County. Detectives believe the body may be that of an individual reported missing several weeks back.
