The No. 1 Longhorns are trying to solidify the elite status that comes from churning out national title contenders on a yearly basis.

For the first time in history, Texas football is ranked No. 1 in one of the major preseason polls. The Longhorns sit atop the Preseason Coaches Poll, edging out reigning national champion Ohio State for the No. 1 spot.

Colin Simmons, the talented edge rusher from Texas, was given the 2024 Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year award. It was a tad controversial at the time, but the merits are certainly true: The Longhorns have a remarkably talented pass-rusher that is going to be a problem for any team they play.

ESPN "College GameDay" host Rece Davis is also a voter in the AP Poll. Davis recently ranked the top 25 college football teams in the country on his AP Poll ballot.

The No. 1-rated Texas Longhorns are coming into the first week of the season as betting underdogs when they face the reigning champion Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30. Ohio State is favored by 2.5 points across the entire betting market, with the total coming in at 48 points for what could be a shootout.

One of the big moves that helped Mike Elko and company steady the ship in the middle of the season was the bold move to bench quarterback Conner Weigman in favor of Marcel Reed.
