Kemps test evaluates the facet joints as a cause of back pain. The examiner places one hand on the patient’s spine and the other on the contralateral shoulder. The patient is guided to extend towards the examiner, sidebend and rotate towards the side being tested. The test is considered positive if it reproduces lower back pain on the same side suggesting facet joint etiology.
